Can I use Small Pistol Primers for Small Rifle Primers?
Small Pistol Primers (SPP) and Small Rifle Primers (SRP) are virtually identical in size, as are the primer pockets in their respective cases. This does not mean that they can be substituted for each other. The SRP still has a much thicker cup and hotter ignition.

Does the 223 use small rifle primers?
Generally speaking, all small rifle primers will work, but each has limitations. Remington 6 1/2 small rifle primers work best in a bolt action. 223 envelope semi-automatic. 223/5.56 rifles.
Why are small rifle primers out of stock?
Pistol primers have thinner and somewhat softer primer cups than their rifle counterparts. Small pistol and rifle primers use a 0.175″ diameter cup, while large pistol and rifle primers are 0.210″ wide. Large Rifle Primers are 0.008″ thicker than Large Pistol Primers.
